This device can be used to determine the existence of the magnetic field away from a permanent magnet.

The approach of a magnet to a device equipped with a "Reed" contact is signaled with an optical and acoustic indication as long as the magnetic field intensity is greater than the triggering value of the "reed" contact. A "reed" contact has the property to close an electrical circuit when it is near a magnetic field with field lines parallel to it.
